Russie - Moscow

de Liz, 13-09-2006

The travels have begun....

Having prepared and packed largely in advance (hmm...), we arrived at Heathrow weighed down by rucksacks full of every single repellant and medicine article known to man (and some known only to the French), as well as a few items of clothing. To our great surprise and dissapointment given the effort we had made just to lift the bags onto a trolley, they weighed less than 20k each (good packing Becky!)

The flight was slightly delayed but fine other than that and our arrival in Moscow was speedy and eventless (they even signed our entry forms). Slight glitch with the taxi that had been ordered to pick us up from the airport (budget travel - never!) in that it didn't turn up, but we managed to buy tickets and take a fairly ancient looking train into the centre of Moscow where Jean-Christophe, our host in Moscow, picked us up. We have spent the past 3 days staying with his family at their flat in central Moscow and it has been fantastic! They are lovely and have given us all the titbits of information you desperately need to survive a few days in this fairly unfriendly city. They have also lent us their chauffeur which has been pretty cool...

Moscow itself is a city of contrasts - stunning, brightly-coloured government and important buildings next to dull and run down appartment blocks. The Red Square is magnificant, just as I had imagined and the Kremlin is simply out of this world. It is full of churches with glorious interiors and the armoury museum, where the Russian collection of jewels, chariots and suits of armour are kept is absolutely mind blowing. The other impressive sight is the underground. On the equivalent of the circle line, all the stations are made of marble - not quite the same as the London or Paris stations I have been used to!

The people we have come across have been fairly cold, however this may just be due to our lack of Russian vocab! They also seem to spend most of their time drinking beer and vodka in the streets, then mopping it up with rather weird looking hot dogs! The women are stunning and really classy (we fitted in perfectly in our 'travelling' gear!) but the men are fairly average looking.

Overall our stay in Moscow has been great, largely thanks to the hospitality of our hosts. Tonight we are heading to the train station to start the mammoth 5 day train journey to Mongolia! I just hope they have a good bar...
